Is reducing CO2 emissions worth the cost?

In late January this year, the The Rosenkranz Foundation hosted a debate as part of the Intelligence Squared U.S. series. Held in New York City, the debate considered the proposition that "Major Reductions in Carbon Emissions Are Not Worth the Money."

The full audio of the debate is available on the NPR website. It is well worth listening to. Also interesting was the response of the audience after the debate. A large number of audience members switched from undecided to supporting the motion that carbon reductions are not worth the money.

It would seem that when more fully informed, the voting public’s minds can be changed on the subject of environmental issues. To the extent that the coal industry allows the issue to remain silent, they may be ensuring difficult times ahead.

Globe & Mail takes revealing look at energy subsidies

A Sept 17, Globe & Mail, Report on Business article (by Globe Reporter

81% of Americans support increased use of domestic energy resources

[img_assist|nid=929|title=Americans support use of domestic energy|desc=|link=popup|url=http://www.americansolutions.com/General/?Page|align=right|width=300|height=187]A just released poll, carried out by The Polling Company, Inc. for American Solutions for Winning The Future, from May 29 – June 1, 2008, indicates clearly that the vast majority of American adults want the Congress to drop the climate change issue and focus instead on the use and development of domestic energy resources, including coal. By large margins, Americans want Congress focused on the costs of energy.

Poll findings also indicated that while American adults are concerned about the potential impacts of climate change, they are far more concerned about the potential impacts of limited energy supplies, the need for domestic energy security, and rapidly rising energy costs.

Shifting scales make UK carbon emissions reductions claims suspect

Depending on which scale or measurement is being used, the UKs carbon dioxide emissions are much better or much worse than their Kyoto requirements.

Some sources (as well as opposition members in Parlaiment) are saying that the numbers the British Government are using to track its carbon dioxide emissions ignore entire sectors of the economy. They claim that when those sectors carbon dioxide emissions are added onto the UKs total emissions the optimistic reports of Brits having surpassed their Kyoto requirements are not quite accurate.
