EPA regs and down markets force layoffs of 260 Kentucky miners
The EPA’s senseless war on coal is claiming several hundred more victims in Kentucky today.
Extreme EPA regulations and down markets were listed as the reason for reports today that another 260 Alpha Natural Resources (ANR) miners will lose their jobs in Harlan and Letcher Counties.
ANR representatives stated that “cutting jobs and laying off people is absolutely the worst thing, and we do not want to do that … The EPA regulations and the market conditions have made it so that in order that we remain more nimble and more durable, we have to make these tough decisions.”
As we have stated previously, the war on coal impacts far more than just the coal industry. As the Mayor of Lynch, KY John Adams noted,
It effects all the grocery stores, department stores, just about down the line. There is an effect on everybody
If they haven’t already, these mine closure and layoffs will soon began to impact the survivability of many Appalachian communities.
