President Obama: “The planet will boil over”

This video shows an excerpt from President Obama’s town hall speech in Johannesburg, SA on Saturday. In this speech the President claimed that if Africans attempted to raise their living standards, “the planet will boil over.”

“Ultimately, if you think about all the youth that everybody has mentioned here in Africa, if everybody is raising living standards to the point where everybody has got a car and everybody has got air conditioning, and everybody has got a big house, well, the planet will boil over — unless we find new ways of producing energy,”

It is sad to hear a respected world leader engaging in inflammatory, irresponsible, and frightening rhetoric such as this. The reality is that we have abundant, reliable, and clean methods of producing electricity and improving our standard of living without destroying the planet. Among those methods are clean coal technologies such as ultra supercritical coal, integrated gasification combined cycle, coal-to-liquids, carbon capture use and storage, and others. We also have natural gas, nuclear, hydroelectric, and renewable options. It would be far more productive for the President to promote those (and other) energy resources instead of attempting to frighten the people of developing nations into foregoing development.
